Today, Becca, Anne, Joe, and I went shopping in Sinking Valley at the Amish community. We stopped at several stores including a furniture store that sold Amish items made locally and in Ohio. The work is beautiful and expensive. Until Joe and I figure out what our next home looks like we are not buying any furniture. Then watch out, I plan to make a trip to Amish communities closer to home near Minnesota.
I bought Shoo Fly Pie, Cinnamon Buns with Cherry topping,
some pepper cheese baked bread, and a bar of orange scented goat milk soap.
The drive was as lovely as all the baked goods, plants, and
fresh veggies we checked out. Joe and I appreciated Becca driving. When we are
in the front seat we are usually in driver and navigator mode. Today, we could
just look to our hearts content while Anne and Becca took us safely to each
store/farm.
The rest of the day was spent visiting with a little bit of
food prep for an outing tomorrow evening. Anne is in the kitchen making batter
for moon pies. I will be helping to make moon pies at some point.
A storm seems to be brewing. We are hearing thunder and the
sky has darkened. Becca went off to a garden party and while we don’t want her
to get wet, the locals are eager for rain. For the past several years, rainfall
has been less than normal.
Joe’s back is continuing to heal. He took Molly and Lilly, Anne
and Becca’s dogs, for a walk this afternoon and managed to tire them out. All
three, Joe, Molly, and Lilly have been taking it easy since the walk. They are
all happily in rest mode.
Before the walk, Joe took apart Anne’s family spinning wheel
as the wheel wobbled when Anne was using it. Anne and Joe successfully got it
back together and while their work improved the wheel, they still want tweak it
a bit more for the best results. Anne liked learning she could take it apart,
if necessary, in the future. Joe enjoyed learning more about spinning wheels
and the opportunity to teach Anne how to fix the spinning wheel.
A short while ago, Joe told me he had enjoyed the day because
he got to learn about spinning wheels. He felt accomplished taking it apart and
putting it back together. He was also happy to have talked with an Amish farmer
about different types of greenhouses. I realized that Joe’s biggest retirement
adjustment may be that he is not fixing or making something every single day.
While we were looking at the Amish furniture today, Joe told
me several times, “If we buy the equipment, I can make this.” We will see how
that works out after we get settled into a home in Minnesota. I would be
totally happy with Joe Coehlo original furniture. It will be quality!
