Camp Chaos and Clean Dishes

I spent the day at Girl Scout camp with my granddaughter’s troop. My daughter is one of the co-leaders, and this year they needed an extra registered volunteer due to scheduling conflicts with both leaders—so that’s where I came in.

Our troop had ten girls with us for most of the day, and a bonus eleventh joined after lunch. One of our assigned duties was kitchen cleanup, which ended up being a big hit with the girls. They took turns rinsing dishes, bowls, cups, and silverware with a high-powered sprayer, stacking them into racks, sliding them into the industrial dishwashing machine, and pulling down the big hood to start the cycle. Once the cycle was complete, they unloaded the clean dishes so they could dry and sorted them into clean dish holders. I think we ran through about 20 racks in total. I was told we did an amazing job—and honestly, for a group of nine-year-olds, they worked together beautifully. They were just as entertained by the water pressure and the loud hum of the dishwashing machine as they were by the job itself.

The rest of the day was packed with activities: a round of Weird Barbie (each girl designed an outfit for a Barbie using fabric, markers, scissors, and a glue gun—even giving haircuts if the mood struck), an escape room challenge, a Barbie bungee jump using their custom dolls, a medallion hunt, a scavenger hunt, and several other fun sessions.

Our troop was the largest of the ten attending, with sixty girls at camp and eleven of them from our group. The energy and noise level were… something else. By the end of the day, the 45-minute drive home felt blissfully quiet.

Now, I’m completely worn out—so it’s off to rest for me.
