Sharpen the Axe

Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. ” - Abraham Lincoln

I heard this quote on a podcast this morning, and it immediately reminded me of Joe Coehlo.

At 1:30 a.m., I picked Joe up from work, and he was really dragging. That’s not like him—even after a ten-hour shift standing at a machine.

He shared that he'd had a tough assignment. It took him four hours just to review the job, track down the company tools he needed, and run the first part for inspection. It was his first time running that job, and he works a shift where there's no one around to ask if questions come up.

Long story short, he was worn out from jumping through hoops to produce quality parts—while still feeling the pressure to work faster.

So when I heard Lincoln’s quote today, I sent it to Joe with a reminder: sometimes the setup takes longer, but in the end, that prep makes the work smoother and the results better.

He knows this, intellectually. But hearing it framed that way helped him put last night’s frustration into perspective.
