Boomers Buy a Roku

We bought a Roku TV today. It's only the second time Joe and I have purchased a television since we got married in 1994. Back then, Joe already had a small black-and-white TV that we used from 1994 until around 2002—until it finally gave out, I think.

In 2003, we bought a bigger TV, but we hardly used it. We gave it away in 2014.

Since then, Joe and I have just used our laptops to watch shows—Hulu, Netflix, Prime, Apple TV, and Peacock. Every so often, we’d talk about buying a new TV, but we always ended up deciding against it.

This morning, though, we finally went for it. We figured it would be nice to have one for guests who stay with us—and especially for when the grandkids visit. Not that I expect either group to spend much time staring at a screen!

Setting it up wasn’t too difficult—I actually managed it all on my own! At one point, I accidentally connected my iPhone to the TV, which became a bit of a nuisance. After about six alerts popped up on my phone (and therefore the TV) while I was trying to connect to Disney, I realized I needed to turn off the Bluetooth or I'd never get Disney connected. Megan would probably say, “You are such a Boomer!”

I added some free TV and movie channels. After about 20 minutes of scrolling through them, I felt completely overwhelmed. But then I came across Jeremiah Johnson—one of my all-time favorite movies! Joe and I are planning a date night soon to watch it together.

The new TV has a 40" screen, which feels massive compared to my 17" laptop. Still, I’ll probably keep using my laptop most of the time, since it lives in the sunroom—and we didn’t want a TV in there. Though honestly, the TV only weighs 11 pounds, so it wouldn’t be hard to move it around if we change our minds.

It’s funny how something as simple as a TV can feel like such a big shift. We’ve lived happily without one for so long, but now that it’s here, I can see it being a nice addition—for company, for cozy nights in, and for a little nostalgia now and then. Who knows? Maybe it’ll even earn a permanent spot in the sunroom someday. Or maybe not. We’ll see.
