Last night was another successful car camping experience at Florence Keller Park. The Subaru head room does not allow for sitting up so we have to crawl in and than lay down. I learned how to put my shoes on while lying down! Shoes are a necessity in the damp forest.
This morning we met up with the T family for breakfast and visited until 11:30am when we started for Ashland, Oregon. We took Hwy 101 to Hwy 199 to Interstate 5 about a 2 1/2 hour drive. The Jedediah Smith State Park and Smith River made for a relaxing drive along the California stretch of 199.
We stopped at a spot along the Smith River to honor my uncle Owen. Before he died in July 2021 he asked that we find a place in the mountains to honor his memory. I had been putting it off because I couldn't envision a place that would work. He loved the ocean and the mountains - this spot seemed ideal. We took time to honor his memory and experience the peaceful sound of the river.
We drove on to Ashland, stopping in Medford to get gas at Costco and to shop at Best Buy. Gas in Crescent City ranged from $5.30 to $5.60 for regular unleaded. We bought only 3 gallons as a cushion before we started for Ashland knowing prices would be less in Oregon. Costco gas in Medford was $3.57/gallon. The Subaru Outback has an 18 gallon tank and averaged 27 miles to the gallon with the majority of our drive occurring in the mountains.
We had plans to meet our niece, Molly, in Ashland for dinner at 6 pm at an Italian restaurant - Pies & Vine. We had some time so parked and worked on setting up Joe's new iPad. We treated ourselves to a little libation for the evening.
After dinner we began the last trek of the day, on to Bend. We are due in about 11:30 pm. Lots of packed snow and icy roads on Hwy 230 out of Ashland. The snow banks edging the road is 3 to 4 feet high. The outside temperature is 17 degrees Fahrenheit. Hard to get a good photo as there is no place to pull over.
