Gilbert AZ to Las Cruces NM

Today’s destination was Las Cruces New Mexico. It is a 5 ½ hour drive from Gilbert, Arizona. With a stop every hour to stretch our legs, use the restroom, and change drivers it took us about 6 hours.

I took a photo of the view from the last rest stop we stopped at in Arizona.

Tonight, we are staying at an awesome rest stop within the Las Cruces city limits east of the city proper.  Here’s the scene from one of the many mini shelters with stone picnic tables. We are using RV Parky phone app to determine safest places to camp each night. I had already selected the stop at mile 135 on Highway 10 so was happy to read the excellent reviews people provided.

Once we left Arizona and entered New Mexico, we began to see a series of signs that read:

In a Dust Storm

Pull off Roadway

Turn Vehicle off

Take foot off brakes

Stay Buckled

Yes, 5 different signs – sort of like the old Burma Shave signs without the rhyming poems. I suspect that being caught in a dust storm is scary. There were also billboards with a website to check out for information on dust storms. Take5stayalive.com. With up to 100-mile winds, I am glad we did not encounter a dust storm today and hope we don’t in the days ahead.

Lots of trucks on the road today! In Arizona and New Mexico, the speed limits are 65 around cities and 75 on the open highways. Unlike California, there are not lower speeds for trucks. At 75 miles per hour, we have found that there are few people weaving in and out of traffic. We tend to drive 70 miles per hour because our Subaru gas mileage and our own driving comfort works best at 70.

We paid $4.35/gallon for gas at Costco in Gilbert, Arizona this morning. GasBuddy is reflecting prices of $3.48 to $3.55 in Las Cruces. We will fuel up in the morning before heading to our next stop – Odessa, Texas.

  1. We got dust storms in Texas. Sometimes, it would start to rain and we would get mud storms. 😁 ❤ eThel
