Safari Tour & Eggbeater Jesus (Day 23 Road Trip)

We had a very full and enjoyable day with Kent and Tammy today. Joe and I drank our morning coffee and enjoyed chatting with Tammy until we got around at about 10:00am and headed over to Harmony Park Safari.

According to the internet, Harmony Park Safari is a federally licensed nature preserve of free-ranging exotic and endangered animals.  You remain in your car on a two-mile route to see zebras, zebus, antelope, buffalo, a camel, ostriches, giraffes, a kangaroo, and tortoises, then park to visit the reptile house. We did not see a Kangaroo, camel. ostriches, or a tortoise today. We did see lots of deer, cows, a foal, an alligator (finally!), ponies, emus, and a zebra to name a few. I took a few photos.

You can buy a small bucket of food for $10.00 so armed with 2 buckets, we fed the animals from our open car windows. It took us two drive throughs of the park to get all the food dispensed. I enjoyed being more up close and personal with the animals than we would be in a zoo.

Going on a Thursday morning meant we were one of two cars while we were there. We did not park and visit the reptiles this trip.

After the park we drove to Ditto Landing Marina located on the Tennessee River at the Southern edge of Huntsville. We walked a short way from the parking lot to the river.

Then it was off to lunch at Super Chix Chicken and Custard. Joe and Tammy ate the avocado sandwich which is breaded avocadostuffed with melted gouda cheese, deep fired, and topped with garlic aioli, lettuce, and tomato and served on a butter toasted potato bun. Kent had their Simple Sandwich which is a breaded chicken filet with kosher pickles served on a butter toasted potato bun. I ate a grilled chicken filet with ham, Swiss cheese, and honey mustard on the toasted potato bun. Then we shared hand-cut French fries. This is the first time I have had French fries with salt and sugar. Tammy explained the potatoes are fried, salted, returned to fryer for a short time, and then sugar is added. It is kind of like kettle corn but with fries. Joe and I are usually not big fry eaters but we both went to town on these fries!

We then drove to the Twickenham neighborhoods of Huntsville. Twickenham is the original town that was later renamed Huntsville. The homes and churches in the Twickenham area are breathtaking. While my favorite site was not Eggbeater Jesus – it was certainly worth seeing. I thought Kent and Tammy were teasing (Kent is a retired minister) us. They are not. If you Google ‘Eggbeater Jesus’, you will see lots of photos of the mural at the First Baptist Church in Huntsville. I did not take the photo below – it is from the internet.

The homes in this district are worth driving around and looking at for hours!

We made our way home where I napped on the back porch while Joe and Kent put together a barbecue. Tammy cooked hamburger and tater tots for dinner. This was served alongside homemade macaroni salad, a green salad, and grapes.

Joe and Kent cleaned up the kitchen while Tammy and I went to her monthly Heritage Quilters of Huntsville meeting. We are not talking just traditional quilts. I took lots of photos and plan sometime this week to write a separate blog and show the photos of the work these gifted and talented quilters are creating.
